जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू । लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥

Friends,

Chaitra sud purnima is celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti! A birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman. Mostly everyone knows about ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ - a devotional stotra addressed to Lord Hanuman. The stotra was written by Tulsidas, when he was imprisoned. On 40th day, the monkeys came to his rescue. Entire town of fatehpur sikri was covered with monkeys. The monkeys also entered the palace and hurt the guards. On suggestion of someone, king Akbar freed Tulsidas, afterwhich the monkeys left the place. Hence, whenever anyone is in trouble, he calls Lord Hanuman for his rescue by chanting Hanuman Chalisa.

That’s not all about Hanuman chalisa. It also indicates distance between the Sun and the Earth. According to our modern science, the distance between the sun and the earth is 149597870700 metres. (Source :- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomical_unit) Now, one of the chopais of Hanuman chalisa is as below.

“Jug sahasra jojan par bhanu। lilyo tahi madhur phal janu॥"
When lord Hanuman was young, he flew towards the Sun, thinking that it is a ripen fruit. In the above chopai, tulsidas stating the incident, gave the distance of the Sun from the Earth. Pl see elaboration of the chopai as below.

Jug = 1 Yug = 12000 . i.e. a unit to denote 12000 units
Sahasra = 1000
Jojan = 1 Yojan = 8 miles
Bhanu = The Sun

Thus,
Jug sahasra jojan = 12000 X 1000 X 8 miles
                            = 96000000 miles
                            = 96000000 X 1600 meters
                            = 153600000000 meters,

which is very close to scientific measurement of distance between the Sun and the Earth i.e. 149597870700 meters !!

Amazing! Our saints must have a very good knowledge of Astronomy, even without scientific equipment available in today’s era !

Jai Hanuman !
